On 2 November 2021, the first two out of 50 pure LNG single-fuel mode bulk carriers ("Dafeng 3001" and "Zhonghe 2001") were successfully delivered in Guangzhou as part of the “Pearl River Project”. This was a major milestone in the project since the initial signing of the contracting agreement on 11 March 2021.
In May 2020, the People's Government of Guangdong Province, China State Shipbuilding Corporation Limited and China National Offshore Oil Corporation signed a 《Framework Agreement regarding the LNG Power Transformation Project for inland ships in Guangdong Province》. This agreement aims to promote an LNG power transformation project for inland ships in Guangdong Province. During the 75th United Nations General Assembly in September 2020, President Xi Jinping highlighted that China will increase its national independent contribution and adopt more effective policies and measures to reach a peak of carbon dioxide emissions by 2030. China will strive to achieve carbon neutrality by 2060. As a clean energy, LNG has significant advantages in reducing carbon dioxide compared with other petrochemical fuels.
The first batch of 50 pure LNG single-fuel mode bulk carriers have been commissioned by Guangdong New Energy Shipping Co., Ltd. ("New Energy Shipping"), a subsidiary of Guangdong Provincial Ports and Shipping Group Co., Ltd. ("Guangdong Provincial Ports and Shipping Group Co., Ltd."), and are planned to be delivered by the end of March 2022. In the future, it aims to build 400 additional new ships. By 2025, Guangdong Province will complete the transformation of about 1,500 LNG ships that are suitable for alteration and the construction of 19 LNG fueling stations. After completion, the annual demand for marine LNG will be about 400,000 tons, and the consumption of alternative oil products will be about 390,000 tons. According to preliminary estimates, the emissions of nitrogen oxides and particulate matter in Guangdong Province will be reduced by 12.6% and 19.5% respectively, which is of great significance in reducing the pollution of the Pearl River, protect the physical and mental health of the people, and promote the high-quality economic development of the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area. The promotion of LNG single-fuel mode bulk carriers in the inland shipping industry in Guangdong Province is also an important measure to implement President Xi Jinping's ecological civilization thought and new development concept, and fulfill President Xi Jinping's earnest commitment in international environmental governance.
